Decorations are the soul of every building or property, which means you need to carefully choose them to deliver the right message, and this includes knowing how to hang something from the ceiling.
Ceiling decorations are not very popular apart from lightbulbs, chandeliers, and ceiling fans, but this doesn’t mean they cannot be spectacular. Even though most of them are designed to make large spaces feel more welcoming, ceiling decorations can be used in narrow spaces also.
With the help of the right trips and tricks, a regular ceiling decoration can easily become the centerpiece of any room and draw attention to the key-points of your property rather than construction flaws or design failures. So, if you want to learn more about how to properly decorate the ceiling of your room, here are all the necessary tips.
How to decorate a ceiling
Long gone are the days when ceilings remained painted in plain and dull-white, showing no signs of expressivity. Nowadays, ceilings have become incredibly important for interior designers and decorators and they are often referred to as the fifth wall. Choosing the right kind of paint or art to hang out from the ceiling can truly transform a room and make it elegant, fresh, or opulent.
But how can you be sure you picked the right color for your ceiling? The answer to this question depends on the effect you are looking to recreate.
For instance, if you have a small space, you should paint the ceiling the same color as the rest of the walls or go for one-two shades lighter. This will give the impression of continuity and tall, big space. You can obtain the same effect by leaving the ceiling white, as long as all the other walls are painted in neutral, light colors also.
If your furniture and room decor are all in neutral colors, you might consider adding a pop of color to your ceiling to make it stand out. Red or rich plum are nice choices but, if you’re bold, you can go for dark grey, navy, and even black.
If you choose to make your ceiling the center element of the room, you should also add small decor elements like pillows, carpets, and vases in the same color for a sense of continuity.
Colors are not the only ways to decorate your ceilings, so, when space and architecture allow you, consider adding wood beams, moldings, chandeliers, or decorative lights to make the ceiling more appealing. However, we recommend adding wood beams as decorative elements only to irregular ceilings or tall rooms to make the place look more welcoming and “homey”.
Finally, mirrors can also be an interesting and bold choice, as long as you choose small ones to capture the light and make the room feel bigger. If you’re scared of your reflection or don’t feel comfortable looking at yourself at all times, mirrors can be replaced with other small decorations.
How to hang objects from the ceiling
If you’re into DIY projects or don’t have the money to hire a professional, decorating your room will require serious skills and several trips to The Home Depot. However, the process of hanging decorations from the ceiling, as well as the materials required for the process, depends on the size and the weight of your decorations.
Hanging very light decorations is the easiest because it doesn’t require too many tools or accessories. Dry flowers, paper decorations, pictures, and others can be tied to strings or wires and attached to the ceiling with regular tape.
You can alternatively use tacks and, what’s even better, is that none of them leave marks on your ceiling, which means you can easily remove them when you no longer want them.
Decorations under five pounds
Tacks and tape won’t do much if your decorations weigh a few pounds but this doesn’t mean you have to invest in expensive materials. The easiest and most affordable option is to hang them to adhesive hooks.
We suggest going for quality adhesive hooks that have strong glue and won’t easily fall after a while. The good thing is that these elements come in various sizes and most of them also come with special release tabs that help you securely remove them, without damaging the paint.
Keep in mind that adhesive hooks won’t work on popcorn or texture ceilings but only on flat ones but they are strong enough to allow you to hang small glass terrariums, framed pictures, decorative lights, hats, and other things you might find cool enough for your room.
Decorations over five founds
Ceiling lights, lamps, chandeliers, decorative plates, and arts can easily weigh over five pounds, which makes them hard to be attached only with adhesive hooks. The latter option isn’t sturdy enough and you risk breaking your decorations in a heartbeat, so it would be best to get your drill ready.
The bad part about heavy decorations is that you must be positive before hanging them because, otherwise, you risk drilling holes in your walls that will change the aesthetics of the room and even make it less appealing in the future.
If you want to firmly attach a hook to the ceiling, you first have to find a joist or one of the wooden beams that run horizontally, behind the plaster, and across the ceiling.
The easiest way to find a joist is to use your knuckles and gently hit the beams until one place doesn’t sound hollow. Once you found it, drill a hole through the plaster and screw a hook into the hole. This should give you enough support to hang heavier objects at your choice.
Alternatively, if the room has wood beams on the ceiling, you can simply tie strong ropes, tiers, or cables around them and hang all the decorations you want. This method works great if the objects aren’t too heavy and if you don’t want to leave any marks and holes on your ceiling.
However, before you hang anything, make sure the wood beams are sturdy and strong enough to hold the weight of the decor piece. If you have doubts, it would be best to try to hang it from an additional beam to have a higher surface or just drill the holes and attach the hooks.
The most challenging objects to hang are the heaviest as you need to take into account a series of factors, including the structure and the architecture of your house.
Most homes don’t have really sturdy ceilings such as those made of concrete but just beams and plasterboards. But, even when the structure is strong, some objects are too heavy to be hanged using only one hook. In this case, you have the option of drilling for a couple more holes and attach additional hooks or ask for professional advice from your contractor.
Wooden art panels, iron pot racks, chandeliers, and other decorative items fall into the heavy-object category but can be easily fixed with the help of hooks. Just make sure to attach the hooks to the same joist about 3 feet apart or find two neighboring joists, between 16 and 24 inches apart. Add heavy chains to both hooks and then use the chains to hang the decor.
Some decorative objects like lighting plates, boats, paddles, and other items made of wood or iron come with their own hanging systems which only requires you to drill some holes into a sturdy wall or ceiling and attach them to the included wires, ropes, or chains.
To make the most of your ceiling decoration piece, you need to make sure the hanging system doesn’t stand out and doesn’t look like it was made by the sloppy hands of a toddler. That being said, you should consider the right type of hangers, depending on the style that you’re looking for.
String or yarn is a good choice because you can purchase it in various colors and you can use smaller decorations on each line to create a waterfall effect.
Twine, on the other hand, represents an excellent choice if you’re going for a more rustic feel, and can be easily matched with the wooden beams, floors, and furniture.
Finally, a fishing wire serves two purposes. It is extremely strong so you can rest assured it is suitable for hanging heavy objects and, since it is thin and clear, it will be almost invisible to the eyes, adding a touch of mystery to any room.
Clothespins can be used to hang lightweight decors along a rope and make a beautiful decoration that goes from one corner to the other of the room. It is perfect for bulbs, photos, glasses, and other small objects that can brighten up the place and make it look unique.
